Active Exploration

Active Exploration is psychotherapy to help people, who have been traumatized by verbal, physical and/or sexual abuse, learn to take charge of their lives again.  It is understandable that after being hurt by others, people may feel powerless, passive, and resigned to their situation. Such behavior is called “learned helplessness” and can be overcome by understanding it and learning how to be active.

What symptoms are associated with learned helplessness following trauma?

 Impulsive self-destructive behavior

outbursts of rage toward people you love

drinking or drugging excessively

Nightmares

Feeling “spacey” and more like a robot than a person

Comments from others that you have a “split personality”
